Research, Training and Symposium Management (RTSM) division is involved in doing scientific research in the field of geotechnique, disaster management and conservation issues of Himalayas. Following are the services provided by the RTSM division in the past.

1. Secretariat Service for International and National Scientific Meetings and Symposiums

GSI team members were involved to conduct two very prestigious symposiums in Kathmandu. Thus, GSI is a right choice, if you are planning for an international and national conference and willing to have convener support or secretariat support. GSI provides support from abstract submission to session planning and pre-symposium field excursion to post-symposium excursion in Nepal as well as in India. GSI can provide this support specifically for symposium or workshop or conference or forum on the themes geotechnical engineering, geological science, civil engineering, disaster management and climate change.

These two symposiums are successfully finished by the Team of GSI.

  • International Symposium on Geohazards: Science, Engineering, Management 2014 on 20-21 November 2014 in Kathmandu. Around 150 participants with more than 100 international participants.
  • 11th International Symposium on Mitigation of Geodisasters in Asia (MGDA-11) on 20-28 October 2013 in Kathmandu and Pokhara with closing ceremony at Nepal China Boarder Kodari.

2. Scientific and Engineering Training

  • Training on Geosciences and Geohazards in the Himalaya with Field Work.

One week training to American University Undergraduate Students about geohazards in Nepal and how to investigate in field. Landslide hazards mapping in field and expressing the analysis in GIS platform. This is a regular training GSI has been conducting from the last two year in collaboration of World Learning INC, SIT study Abroad.

  • Disaster risk management training to Governmental as well as Non Governmental organizations including parliamentarians
  • Landslide Inventory and Database Preparation

Preparation of National database of landslide inventory in Nepal is currently undergoing by the help of GIS experts. The beta version of the landslide inventory will be online by the end of February.

  • Seismic Zonation Map Using Microtremor

GSI is also involved in seismic risk evaluation of Kathmandu Valley. Under this research work, microzonation mapping of Kathmandu Valley is being carried out.

3. Research Support

GSI is building collaboration and cooperation between local organization and international organization to conduct collaborative research works in the field of geohazards and providing geotechnical solutions. At present, GSI is working together with Himalaya Conservation Group, Himalayan Landslide Society, International Consortium on Geodisaster Reduction (ICGDR), Japan, Hydrotech Laboratory Taiwan National University, Ehime University, Japan, and Kagawa University Japan.
