Brief information of Dr. Ranjan Kumar Dahal
Dr. Ranjan Kumar Dahal, a professional engineering geologist and geohazard expert of Nepal, has been working in the research field of geohazards such as earthquake, landslides and debris flow for the last 23 years. He was born in Kathmandu and got his primary, secondary and basic university education in Nepal. Dr. Dahal has completed PhD Engineering and PostDoc in disaster management degrees from Japan. He specializes in landslide, debris flow and earthquake risk research and management. At present, he is serving Tribhuvan University as an Associate Professor in Geodisaster Research Center, Central Department of Geology. From April 2016 to 2019 March, Dr. Dahal was serving as a Coordinator of MSc in Engineering Geology Program of Tribhuvan University, Nepal. From the research and academic perspective, he has published more than 80 technical/scientific papers in peer-reviewed international and national journals. He is the author of two books (“Geology for Technical Students” and “Rainfall-induced Landslide”) and he has contributed to three books as co-author. Dr. Dahal was awarded the Best Research Award-2009 from the Faculty of Engineering, Kagawa University, Takamatsu, Japan and Nepal Bidhya Bhushan ‘Ka’ 2009 from the Ministry of Education, Government of Nepal. Based on his excellent credential and academic contribution, he has been awarded as Young Scientist of Nepal in 2009 by Nepal Academy for Science and Technology (NAST) and in 2010, he has been nominated as Fellow Academician in NAST. He is serving Kagawa University, Japan as a visiting professor, and Ehime University, Japan as a visiting associate professor. Dr. Dahal has been involved in various projects and he has developed an original methodology for Topo-stress based landslide hazard mapping. Also, he has discovered the rainfall threshold of landslide for the Nepal Himalaya.
Dr. Dahal has been regularly involved in the summer training courses of National Taiwan University in Taiwan and consulting projects related to the geohazard risk assessment in different countries such as Japan, Uganda, and India. He is the Management Director of the International Consortium of Geodisaster Reduction (ICGdR) and works in close coordination with geohazard experts of Japan, Taiwan, China, and Indonesia, USA and European countries for geodisaster reduction for the benefits of human society, the natural environment, and capacity development, including education. He is the Associate-Editor-in-Chief of Springer Open Journal of Geoenvironmental Disasters where geohazards related articles are submitted from all around the world and Dr. Dahal is responsible for critical review and editing of all the technical papers. He was serving International Journal of Landslide and Environment (IJLE) and Nepal Journal of Science and Technology (NJST) as Associate-Editor-in-Chief. He also serves Bulletin of Engineering Geology and Environment (IAEG’s Official Journal) as a member of the editorial board. Dr. Dahal is supporting the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC), Delhi, India as coordinator from Co-host Nepal.
Dr. Dahal is associated with the Himalaya Conservation Group (HCG) as a Chief Technical Adviser and involved in advocating research-based policymaking concepts for the Himalayan Region. He was assigned as a special expert for the Sunkoshi Landslide Dam rescue and response program of the Government of Nepal in 2013 and he has helped Nepal Army to open landslide dam in a manageable way. After the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, the Government of Nepal has nominated him as a member in the National Reconstruction Consulting Committee. With such long expertise and exposure of national as well as international engineering geology related research and consulting works, he is serving Nepal for suitable mitigation practice for landslides and earthquake resist buildings. Dr. Dahal has started a new technology of rock fall hazard mitigation in Nepal with the help of his Austrian colleagues. His team has customized rock fall hazard mitigation system installation process. And having vested interest to use research findings in implementation, he has been continuously advocating for research based sustainable mitigation and prevention practice of geohazards in South Asian Region.
