Brief information of Dr. Ranjan Kumar Dahal
Dr. Ranjan Kumar Dahal is a distinguished professional geology engineer and geohazard expert in Nepal, with over 20 years of experience in researching geohazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and debris flows. He holds a PhD and a Post-Doctorate in geohazards, specializing in landslide, debris flow, and earthquake risk research and management. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor in the Himalayan Geodisaster Research Center at Tribhuvan University‘s Central Department of Geology.
In terms of academic contributions, Dr. Dahal has published more than 60 technical and scientific papers in peer-reviewed international and national journals, authored one book, and co-authored three others. His exceptional credentials earned him the title of Young Scientist of Nepal in 2009 from the Nepal Academy for Science and Technology (NAST), and he was nominated as a Fellow Academician in 2010.
Dr. Dahal has also served as a visiting professor at Kagawa University and as a visiting associate professor at Ehime University, both in Japan. His expertise extends internationally, having participated in various research projects, training courses, and consulting initiatives related to geohazard risk assessment in countries such as Japan, Taiwan, and India.
As the Management Director of the International Consortium of Geodisaster Reduction (ICGdR), Dr. Dahal collaborates with geohazard experts from Japan, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, the USA, and various European countries to advance geodisaster reduction for societal and environmental benefits, as well as capacity development in education. He is the Associate-Editor-in-Chief of the Springer Open Journal of Geoenvironmental Disasters, overseeing the critical review and editing of geohazards-related articles submitted globally. He also serves the International Journal of Landslide and Environment (IJLE) in the same editorial capacity.
In addition to his editorial roles, Dr. Dahal is the Chief Technical Adviser for the Himalaya Conservation Group (HCG), where he advocates for research-based policy-making concepts. Notably, he was appointed as a special expert for the Sunkoshi Landslide Dam rescue and response program in 2013, aiding the Nepal Army in managing the landslide dam. Following the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, he was nominated by the Government of Nepal to the National Reconstruction Consulting Committee. With extensive national and international experience in geohazard research, Dr. Dahal is dedicated to implementing effective mitigation practices for landslides and earthquake-resistant buildings, consistently advocating for research-based sustainable mitigation and prevention strategies in Nepal.
